The swastika or sauwastika (as a character, 卐 or 卍, respectively) is a geometrical figure and an ancient religious icon in the cultures of Eurasia. It is used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions.[1][2][3][4] In the Western world, it was a symbol of auspiciousness and good luck until the 1930s, when it became a feature of Nazi symbolism as an emblem of Aryan identity. As a result of World War II and the Holocaust, most people associate it with Nazism and antisemitism.[5][6]
The name swastika comes from Sanskrit (Devanagari: स्वस्तिक) meaning 'conducive to well being' or 'auspicious'.[7][8] In Hinduism, the symbol with arms pointing clockwise (卐) is called swastika, symbolizing surya ('sun'), prosperity and good luck, while the counterclockwise symbol (卍) is called sauvastika, symbolizing night or tantric aspects of Kali.[8] In Jainism, a swastika is the symbol for Suparshvanatha – the seventh of 24 Tirthankaras (spiritual teachers and saviours), while in Buddhism it symbolizes the auspicious footprints of the Buddha.[8][9][10] In several major Indo-European religions, the swastika symbolizes lightning bolts, representing the thunder god and the king of the gods, such as Indra in Vedic Hinduism, Zeus in the ancient Greek religion, Jupiter in the ancient Roman religion, and Thor in the ancient Germanic religion.[1 1]
The swastika is an icon which is widely found in both human history and the modern world.[4][8] In various forms, it is otherwise known (in various European languages) as the fylfot, gammadion, tetraskelion, or cross cramponnée (a term in Anglo-Norman heraldry); German: Hakenkreuz; French: croix gammée. In China it is named wàn 卐 / 卍 / 萬, meaning 'all things', pronounced manji in Japanese. A swastika generally takes the form of a cross, the arms of which are of equal length and perpendicular to the adjacent arms, each bent midway at a right angle.[11][12] The symbol is found in the archeological remains of the Indus Valley Civilization and Mesopotamia, as well as in early Byzantine and Christian artwork.[4][8]
The swastika was adopted by several organizations in pre–World War I Europe, and later by the Nazi Party and Nazi Germany before World War II. It was used by the Nazi Party to symbolize German nationalistic pride. To Jews and the enemies of Nazi Germany, it became a symbol of antisemitism and terror.[5] In many Western countries, the swastika is viewed as a symbol of racial supremacism and intimidation because of its association with Nazism.[6][13][14] Reverence for the swastika symbol in Asian cultures, in contrast to the West's stigmatization of the symbol, has led to misinterpretations and misunderstandings.[15][16]

Etymology and nomenclature[edit]

The word swastika has been used in the Indian subcontinent and the middle east since 500 BCE.[17] Its appearance in English dates to the 1870s, replacing gammadion from Greek γαμμάδιον.[11] It is alternatively spelled in contemporary texts as svastika,[18] and other spellings were occasionally used in the 19th and early 20th century, such as suastika.[19] It was derived from the Sanskrit term (Devanagariस्वस्तिक), which transliterates to svastika under the commonly used IAST transliteration system, but is pronounced closer to swastika when letters are used with their English values. The first use of the word swastika in a European text is found in 1871 with the publications of Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered more than 1,800 ancient samples of the swastika symbol and its variants while digging the Hisarlik mound near the Aegean Sea coast for the history of Troy. Schliemann linked his findings to the Sanskrit swastika.[13][20][21]
The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit root swasti, which is composed of su ('good, well') and asti ('it is; there is').[22] The word swasti occurs frequently in the Vedas as well as in classical literature, meaning 'health, luck, success, prosperity', and it was commonly used as a greeting.[23][24] The final ka is a common suffix that could have multiple meanings.[25] According to Monier-Williams, a majority of scholars consider it a solar symbol.[23] The sign implies something fortunate, lucky, or auspicious, and it denotes auspiciousness or well-being.[23]
The earliest known use of the word swastika is in Panini's Ashtadhyayi which uses it to explain one of the Sanskrit grammar rules, in the context of a type of identifying mark on a cow's ear.[22] Most scholarship suggests that Panini lived in or before the 4th-century BCE,[26][27] possibly in 6th or 5th century BCE.[28][29]
Other names for the symbol include:
- tetragammadion (Greek: τετραγαμμάδιον) or cross gammadion (Latin: crux gammata; French: croix gammée), as each arm resembles the Greek letter Γ (gamma)[11]
- hooked cross (German: Hakenkreuz), angled cross (Winkelkreuz), or crooked cross (Krummkreuz)
- cross cramponned,cramponnée, or cramponny in heraldry, as each arm resembles a crampon or angle-iron (German: Winkelmaßkreuz)
- fylfot, chiefly in heraldry and architecture
- tetraskelion (Greek: τετρασκέλιον), literally meaning 'four-legged', especially when composed of four conjoined legs (compare triskelion/triskele [Greek: τρισκέλιον])[30]
- whirling logs (Navajo, Native American): can denote abundance, prosperity, healing, and luck[31]
Appearance[edit]

All swastikas are bent crosses based on a chiral symmetry – but they appear with different geometric details: as compact crosses with short legs, as crosses with large arms and as motifs in a pattern of unbroken lines. One distinct representation of a swastika, as a double swastika or swastika made of squares, appears in a Nepalese silver mohar coin of 1685, kingdom of Patan (NS 805) KM# 337.[34]
Chirality describes an absence of reflective symmetry, with the existence of two versions that are mirror images of each other. The mirror-image forms are typically described as:
- left-facing (卍) and right-facing (卐);
- left-hand (卍) and right-hand (卐).
The left-facing version is distinguished in some traditions and languages as a distinct symbol from the right-facing and is called the 'sauwastika'.
The compact swastika can be seen as a chiral irregular icosagon (20-sided polygon) with fourfold (90°) rotational symmetry. Such a swastika proportioned on a 5 × 5 square grid and with the broken portions of its legs shortened by one unit can tile the plane by translation alone. The Nazi Hakenkreuz used a 5 × 5 diagonal grid, but with the legs unshortened.[35]

Written characters[edit]
The sauwastika was adopted as a standard character in Chinese, '卍' (pinyin: wàn) and as such entered various other East Asian languages, including Chinese script. In Japanese the symbol is called '卍' (Hepburn: manji) or '卍字' (manji).
The sauwastika is included in the Unicode character sets of two languages. In the Chinese block it is U+534D 卍 (left-facing) and U+5350 for the swastika 卐 (right-facing);[36] The latter has a mapping in the original Big5 character set,[37] but the former does not (although it is in Big5+[38]). In Unicode 5.2, two swastika symbols and two sauwastikas were added to the Tibetan block: swastika U+0FD5࿕RIGHT-FACING SVASTI SIGN, U+0FD7࿗RIGHT-FACING SVASTI SIGN WITH DOTS, and sauwastikas U+0FD6࿖LEFT-FACING SVASTI SIGN, U+0FD8࿘LEFT-FACING SVASTI SIGN WITH DOTS.[39]
Meaning of the symbol[edit]
European hypotheses of the swastika are often treated in conjunction with cross symbols in general, such as the sun cross of Bronze Age religion. Beyond its certain presence in the 'proto-writing' symbol systems, such as the Vinca script,[40] which appeared during the Neolithic.[41]

North pole[edit]
According to René Guénon, the swastika represents the north pole, and the rotational movement around a centre or immutable axis (axis mundi), and only secondly it represents the Sun as a reflected function of the north pole. As such it is a symbol of life, of the vivifying role of the supreme principle of the universe, the absoluteGod, in relation to the cosmic order. It represents the activity (the Hellenic Logos, the Hindu Om, the Chinese Taiyi, 'Great One') of the principle of the universe in the formation of the world.[42] According to Guénon, the swastika in its polar value has the same meaning of the yin and yang symbol of the Chinese tradition, and of other traditional symbols of the working of the universe, including the letters Γ (gamma) and G, symbolizing the Great Architect of the Universe of Freemasonic thought.[43]
According to the scholar Reza Assasi, the swastika represents the north ecliptic north pole centred in ζ Draconis, with the constellation Draco as one of its beams. He argues that this symbol was later attested as the four-horse chariot of Mithra in ancient Iranian culture. They believed the cosmos was pulled by four heavenly horses who revolved around a fixed centre in a clockwise direction. He suggests that this notion later flourished in Roman Mithraism, as the symbol appears in Mithraic iconography and astronomical representations.[44]
According to the Russian archaeologist Gennady Zdanovich, who studied some of the oldest examples of the symbol in Sintashta culture, the swastika symbolizes the universe, representing the spinning constellations of the celestial north pole centred in α Ursae Minoris, specifically the Little and Big Dipper (or Chariots), or Ursa Minor and Ursa Major.[45] Likewise, according to René Guénon the swastika is drawn by visualising the Big Dipper/Great Bear in the four phases of revolution around the pole star.[46]

Carl Sagan in his book Comet (1985) reproduces a Han-dynasty Chinese manuscript (the Book of Silk, 2nd century BCE) that shows comet tail varieties: most are variations on simple comet tails, but the last shows the comet nucleus with four bent arms extending from it, recalling a swastika. Sagan suggests that in antiquity a comet could have approached so close to Earth that the jets of gas streaming from it, bent by the comet's rotation, became visible, leading to the adoption of the swastika as a symbol across the world.[47]
Bob Kobres in his 1992 paper Comets and the Bronze Age Collapse contends that the swastika-like comet on the Han-dynasty silk comet manuscript was labeled a 'long tailed pheasant star' (dixing) because of its resemblance to a bird's foot or footprint,[48] the latter comparison also being drawn by J.F.K. Hewitt's observation on page 145 of Primitive Traditional History: vol. 1.[49] as well as an article concerning carpet decoration in Good Housekeeping.[50] Kobres goes on to suggest an association of mythological birds and comets also outside China.[48]

The earliest known swastika is from 15,000 years ago – part of 'an intricate meander pattern of joined-up swastikas' found on a late paleolithic figurine of a bird, carved from mammoth ivory, found in Mezine, Ukraine. It has been suggested that this swastika may be a stylized picture of a stork in flight.[52] As the carving was found near phallic objects, this may also support the idea that the pattern was a fertility symbol.[53]
In England, neolithic or Bronze Age stone carvings of the symbol have been found on Ilkley Moor, such as the Swastika Stone.
Mirror-image swastikas (clockwise and anti-clockwise) have been found on ceramic pottery in the Devetashka cave, Bulgaria, dated to 6,000 BCE.[54]
Some of the earliest archaeological evidence of the swastika in the Indian subcontinent can be dated to 3,000 BCE.[55] Investigators have also found seals with 'mature and geometrically ordered' swastikas that date to before the Indus Valley Civilisation (3300–1300 BCE). Their efforts have traced references to swastikas in the Vedas at about that time. The investigators put forth the theory that the swastika moved westward from India to Finland, Scandinavia, the British Highlands and other parts of Europe.[56]
Swastikas have also been found on pottery in archaeological digs in Africa, in the area of Kush and on pottery at the Jebel Barkal temples,[57] in Iron Age designs of the northern Caucasus (Koban culture), and in Neolithic China in the Majiabang,[58]Majiayao,[59]Dawenkou and Xiaoheyan cultures.[60]
Other Iron Age attestations of the swastika can be associated with Indo-European cultures such as the Illyrians,[61]Indo-Iranians, Celts, Greeks, Germanic peoples and Slavs. In Sintashta culture's 'Country of Towns', ancient Indo-European settlements in southern Russia, it has been found a great concentration of some of the oldest swastika patterns.[45]
The swastika is also seen in Egypt during the Coptic period. Textile number T.231-1923 held at the V&A Museum in London includes small swastikas in its design. This piece was found at Qau-el-Kebir, near Asyut, and is dated between CE 300 and 600.[62][63]
The Tierwirbel (the German for 'animal whorl' or 'whirl of animals'[64]) is a characteristic motif in Bronze Age Central Asia, the Eurasian Steppe, and later also in Iron Age Scythian and European (Baltic[65] and Germanic) culture, showing rotational symmetric arrangement of an animal motif, often four birds' heads. Even wider diffusion of this 'Asiatic' theme has been proposed, to the Pacific and even North America (especially Moundville).[66]

Historical use[edit]
In Asia, the swastika symbol first appears in the archaeological record around[55] 3000 BCE in the Indus Valley Civilization.[68][69] It also appears in the Bronze and Iron Age cultures around the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. In all these cultures the swastika symbol does not appear to occupy any marked position or significance, but appears as just one form of a series of similar symbols of varying complexity. In the Zoroastrian religion of Persia, the swastika was a symbol of the revolving sun, infinity, or continuing creation.[70][71] It is one of the most common symbols on Mesopotamian coins.[8]
The icon has been of spiritual significance to Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.[4][8] The use of the swastika by the Bön faith of Tibet, as well as Chinese Taoism, can also be traced to Buddhist influence.

In Jainism, it is a symbol of the seventh tīrthaṅkara, Suparśvanātha.[8] In the Śvētāmbara tradition, it is also one of the aṣṭamaṅgala or eight auspicious symbols. All Jain temples and holy books must contain the swastika and ceremonies typically begin and end with creating a swastika mark several times with rice around the altar. Jains use rice to make a swastika in front of statues and then put an offering on it, usually a ripe or dried fruit, a sweet (Hindi: मिठाईmiṭhāī), or a coin or currency note. The four arms of the swastika symbolize the four places where a soul could be reborn in the cycle of birth and death – svarga 'heaven', naraka 'hell', manushya 'humanity' or tiryancha 'as flora or fauna' – before the soul attains moksha 'salvation' as a siddha, having ended the cycle of birth and death and become omniscient.[3]

The swastika is an important Hindu symbol.[4][8] The swastika symbol is commonly used before entrances or on doorways of homes or temples, to mark the starting page of financial statements, and mandalas constructed for rituals such as weddings or welcoming a newborn.[8][72]
The swastika has a particular association with Diwali, being drawn in rangoli (coloured sand) or formed with deepak lights on the floor outside Hindu houses and on wall hangings and other decorations.[73]
In the diverse traditions within Hinduism, both the clockwise and counterclockwise swastika are found, with different meanings. The clockwise or right hand icon is called swastika, while the counterclockwise or left hand icon is called sauvastika.[8] The clockwise swastika is a solar symbol (Surya), suggesting the motion of the sun in India (the northern hemisphere), where it appears to enter from the east, then ascend to the south at midday, exiting to the west.[8] The counterclockwise sauvastika is less used; it connotes the night, and in tantric traditions it is an icon for the goddess Kali, the terrifying form of Devi Durga.[8] The symbol also represents activity, karma, motion, wheel, and in some contexts the lotus.[1][2] Its symbolism for motion and Sun may be from shared prehistoric cultural roots, according to Norman McClelland.[74] The Arya Samaj is of the opinion that swastik is 'OM' written in the ancient Brahmi script.[citation needed]

Buddhism[edit]

In Buddhism, the swastika is considered to symbolize the auspicious footprints of the Buddha.[8][9] It is an aniconic symbol for the Buddha in many parts of Asia and homologous with the dharma wheel.[2] The shape symbolizes eternal cycling, a theme found in samsara doctrine of Buddhism.[2]
The swastika symbol is common in esoteric tantric traditions of Buddhism, along with Hinduism, where it is found with Chakra theories and other meditative aids.[72] The clockwise symbol is more common, and contrasts with the counter clockwise version common in the Tibetan Bon tradition and locally called yungdrung.[75]
East Asia[edit]

Swastika-like symbols were in use in China already in Neolithic scripts. The paired swastika symbols (leftwise and rightwise) are included, at least since the Liao Dynasty (CE 907–1125), as part of the Chinese writing system (卍 and 卐) and are variant characters for 萬 or 万 (wàn in Mandarin, man in Korean, Cantonese, and Japanese, vạn in Vietnamese) meaning 'myriad', 'all', or 'eternity'. The swastika marks the beginning of many Buddhist scriptures. In East Asian countries, the left-facing character is often used as symbol for Buddhism and marks the site of a Buddhist temple on maps.

In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean the swastika is also a homonym of the number 10,000, and is commonly used to represent the whole of creation, e.g. 'the myriad things' in the Tao Te Ching. During the Tang dynasty, Empress Wu Zetian (684–704) decreed that the swastika would also be used as an alternative symbol of the Sun.
When the Chinese writing system was introduced to Japan in the 8th century, the swastika was adopted into the Japanese language and culture. It is commonly referred as the manji (lit. '10,000-character'). Since the Middle Ages, it has been used as a mon by various Japanese families such as Tsugaru clan, Hachisuka clan or around 60 clans that belong to Tokugawa clan.[76] On Japanese maps, a swastika (left-facing and horizontal) is used to mark the location of a Buddhist temple. The right-facing swastika is often referred to as the gyaku manji (逆卍, lit. 'reverse swastika') or migi manji (右卍, lit. 'right swastika'), and can also be called kagi jūji (鉤十字, literally 'hook cross').

In Chinese and Japanese art, the swastika is often found as part of a repeating pattern. One common pattern, called sayagata in Japanese, comprises left- and right-facing swastikas joined by lines.[77] As the negative space between the lines has a distinctive shape, the sayagata pattern is sometimes called the key fret motif in English.

An object very much like a hammer or a double axe is depicted among the magical symbols on the drums of Sami shamans, used in their religious ceremonies before Christianity was established. The name of the Sami thunder god was Horagalles, thought to derive from 'Old Man Thor' (Þórr karl). Sometimes on the drums, a male figure with a hammer-like object in either hand is shown, and sometimes it is more like a cross with crooked ends, or a swastika.[78]
Germanic Iron Age[edit]

The swastika shape (also called a fylfot) appears on various Germanic Migration Period and Viking Age artifacts, such as the 3rd-century Værløse Fibula from Zealand, Denmark, the Gothic spearhead from Brest-Litovsk, today in Belarus, the 9th-century Snoldelev Stone from Ramsø, Denmark, and numerous Migration Period bracteates drawn left-facing or right-facing.[79]
The paganAnglo-Saxonship burial at Sutton Hoo, England, contained numerous items bearing the swastika, now housed in the collection of the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.[78][not in citation given] The swastika is clearly marked on a hilt and sword belt found at Bifrons in Kent, in a grave of about the 6th century.
Hilda Ellis Davidson theorized that the swastika symbol was associated with Thor, possibly representing his Mjolnir – symbolic of thunder – and possibly being connected to the Bronze Age sun cross.[78] Davidson cites 'many examples' of the swastika symbol from Anglo-Saxon graves of the pagan period, with particular prominence on cremation urns from the cemeteries of East Anglia.[78] Some of the swastikas on the items, on display at the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, are depicted with such care and art that, according to Davidson, it must have possessed special significance as a funerary symbol.[78] The runic inscription on the 8th-century Sæbø sword has been taken as evidence of the swastika as a symbol of Thor in Norse paganism.

According to painter Stanisław Jakubowski the 'little sun' (pol. słoneczko) is an Early Slavic pagan symbol of the Sun. It was engraved on wooden monuments built near the final resting places of fallen Slavs to represent eternal life. The symbol was first seen in a collection of Early Slavic symbols and architectural features drawn and compiled by Polish painter Stanisław Jakubowski, which he named Prasłowiańskie motywy architektoniczne (Polish: Early Slavic Architectural Motifs). His work was published in 1923, by a publishing house that was then based in the Dębniki district of Kraków.[81] The symbol can also be found on embroidery and pottery in most Slavic countries.[citation needed]

In Russia before World War I the swastika was a favorite sign of the last Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. She placed it where she could for happiness, including drawing it in pencil on the walls and windows in the Ipatiev House – where the royal family was executed. There, she also drew a swastika on the wallpaper above the bed where the heir apparently slept.[82] It was printed on some banknotes of the Russian Provisional Government (1917) and some sovznaks (1918–1922).[83] In 1919 it was approved as insignia for the Kalmyk formations,[84] and for a short period had a certain popularity amongst some artists, politics and army groups.[85] Also it was present on icons, vestments and clerical clothing[86] but in World War II it was removed, having become by association a symbol of the German occupation.[87]
In modern Russia, some neo-Nazis[88][89] and also Rodnovers argue that the Russian name of the swastika is kolovrat (Russian: коловрат, literally 'spinning wheel'), but there are no ethnographic sources confirming this.[87][90] In vernacular speech the swastika was called differently; for example, 'breeze' – as in Christianity, the swastika represents spiritual movement, descent of the Holy Spirit, and therefore the 'wind' and 'spirit',[87] or ognevtsi ('little flames'), 'geese', 'hares' (a towel with a swastika was called as towel with 'hares'), 'little horses'.[86][87]
The neo-Nazi Russian National Unity group's branch in Estonia is officially registered under the name 'Kolovrat' and published an extremist newspaper in 2001 under the same name.[88] A criminal investigation found the paper included an array of racial epithets. One Narva resident was sentenced to 1 year in jail for distribution of Kolovrat.[91] The Kolovrat has since been used by the Rusich Battalion, a Russian militant group known for its operation during the War in Donbass.[92][additional citation(s) needed]
The perpetrator of the Christchurch mosque shootings in Christchurch, New ZealandBrenton Harrison Tarrant used the Kolovrat swastika on one of his dog tags alongside the Celtic Cross.[93]
Celts[edit]
The bronze frontispiece of a ritual pre-Christian (c. 350–50 BCE) shield found in the River Thames near Battersea Bridge (hence 'Battersea Shield') is embossed with 27 swastikas in bronze and red enamel.[94] An Ogham stone found in Anglish, Co Kerry, Ireland (CIIC 141) was modified into an early Christian gravestone, and was decorated with a cross pattée and two swastikas.[95] The Book of Kells (c. 800 CE) contains swastika-shaped ornamentation. At the Northern edge of Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire, there is a swastika-shaped pattern engraved in a stone known as the Swastika Stone.[96] A number of swastikas have been found embossed in Galician metal pieces and carved in stones, mostly from the Castro Culture period, although there also are contemporary examples (imitating old patterns for decorative purposes).[97][98]
Greco-Roman antiquity[edit]
Ancient Greek architectural, clothing and coin designs are replete with single or interlinking swastika motifs. There are also gold plate fibulae from the 8th century BCE decorated with an engraved swastika.[99] Related symbols in classical Western architecture include the cross, the three-legged triskele or triskelion and the rounded lauburu. The swastika symbol is also known in these contexts by a number of names, especially gammadion,[100] or rather the tetra-gammadion. The name gammadion comes from its being seen as being made up of four Greek gamma (Γ) letters. Ancient Greek architectural designs are replete with the interlinking symbol.
In Greco-Roman art and architecture, and in Romanesque and Gothic art in the West, isolated swastikas are relatively rare, and the swastika is more commonly found as a repeated element in a border or tessellation. The swastika often represented perpetual motion, reflecting the design of a rotating windmill or watermill. A meander of connected swastikas makes up the large band that surrounds the AugustanAra Pacis.
A design of interlocking swastikas is one of several tessellations on the floor of the cathedral of Amiens, France.[101] A border of linked swastikas was a common Roman architectural motif,[102] and can be seen in more recent buildings as a neoclassical element. A swastika border is one form of meander, and the individual swastikas in such a border are sometimes called Greek keys. There have also been swastikas found on the floors of Pompeii.[103]

Illyrians[edit]
The swastika was widespread among the Illyrians, symbolizing the Sun. The Sun cult was the main Illyrian cult; the Sun was represented by a swastika in clockwise motion, and it stood for the movement of the Sun.[104]
Armenia[edit]

In Armenia the swastika is called the 'arevakhach' and 'kerkhach' (Armenian: կեռխաչ)[105][dubious] and is the ancient symbol of eternity and eternal light (i.e. God). Swastikas in Armenia were founded on petroglyphs from the copper age, predating the Bronze Age. During the Bronze Age it was depicted on cauldrons, belts, medallions and other items.[106] Among the oldest petroglyphs is the seventh letter of the Armenian alphabet – 'E' (which means 'is' or 'to be') – depicted as a half-swastika.
Swastikas can also be seen on early Medieval churches and fortresses, including the principal tower in Armenia's historical capital city of Ani.[105] The same symbol can be found on Armenian carpets, cross-stones (khachkar) and in medieval manuscripts, as well as on modern monuments as a symbol of eternity.[107]
Medieval and early modern Europe[edit]

In Christianity, the swastika is used as a hooked version of the Christian Cross, the symbol of Christ's victory over death. Some Christian churches built in the Romanesque and Gothic eras are decorated with swastikas, carrying over earlier Roman designs. Swastikas are prominently displayed in a mosaic in the St. Sophia church of Kiev, Ukraine dating from the 12th century. They also appear as a repeating ornamental motif on a tomb in the Basilica of St. Ambrose in Milan.[citation needed]
A ceiling painted in 1910 in the church of St Laurent in Grenoble has many swastikas. It can be visited today because the church became the archaeological museum of the city. A proposed direct link between it and a swastika floor mosaic in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens, which was built on top of a pagan site at Amiens, France in the 13th century, is considered unlikely. The stole worn by a priest in the 1445 painting of the Seven Sacraments by Rogier van der Weyden presents the swastika form simply as one way of depicting the cross.
Swastikas also appear in art and architecture during the Renaissance and Baroque era. The fresco The School of Athens shows an ornament made out of swastikas, and the symbol can also be found on the facade of the Santa Maria della Salute, a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica located at Punta della Dogana in the Dorsoduro sestiere of the city of Venice.
In the Polish First Republic the symbol of the swastika was also popular with the nobility. According to chronicles, the Rus' prince Oleg, who in the 9th century attacked Constantinople, nailed his shield (which had a large red swastika painted on it) to the city's gates.[111] Several noble houses, e.g. Boreyko, Borzym, and Radziechowski from Ruthenia, also had swastikas as their coat of arms. The family reached its greatness in the 14th and 15th centuries and its crest can be seen in many heraldry books produced at that time.The swastika was also a heraldic symbol, for example on the Boreyko coat of arms, used by noblemen in Poland and Ukraine. In the 19th century the swastika was one of the Russian empire's symbols; it was even placed in coins as a background to the Russian eagle.[112][113]

Americas[edit]
The swastika is a Navajo symbol for good luck, also translated to 'whirling log.' The symbol was used on state road signs in Arizona. [115][116]
Early 20th century[edit]

In the Western world, the symbol experienced a resurgence following the archaeological work in the late 19th century of Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered the symbol in the site of ancient Troy and associated it with the ancient migrations of Proto-Indo-Europeans, whose proto-language was not coincidentally termed 'Proto-Indo-Germanic' by German language historians. He connected it with similar shapes found on ancient pots in Germany, and theorized that the swastika was a 'significant religious symbol of our remote ancestors', linking it to ancient Teutons, Greeks of the time of Homer and Indians of the Vedic era.[117][118] By the early 20th century, it was used worldwide and was regarded as a symbol of good luck and success.
Schliemann's work soon became intertwined with the political völkisch movements, which used the swastika as a symbol for the 'Aryan race' – a concept that theorists such as Alfred Rosenberg equated with a Nordicmaster race originating in northern Europe. Since its adoption by the Nazi Party of Adolf Hitler, the swastika has been associated with Nazism, fascism, racism in its (white supremacy) form, the Axis powers in World War II, and the Holocaust in much of the West. The swastika remains a core symbol of neo-Nazi groups.
The Benedictine choir school at Lambach Abbey, Upper Austria, which Hitler attended for several months as a boy, had a swastika chiseled into the monastery portal and also the wall above the spring grotto in the courtyard by 1868. Their origin was the personal coat of arms of Abbot Theoderich Hagn of the monastery in Lambach, which bore a golden swastika with slanted points on a blue field.[119] The Lambach swastika is probably of Medieval origin.

Theosophical Seal
In the 1880s the Theosophical Society adopted a swastika as part of its seal, along with an Om, a hexagram or star of David, an Ankh and an Ouroboros. Unlike the much more recent Raëlian movement, the Theosophical Society symbol has been free from controversy, and the seal is still used. The current seal also includes the text 'There is no religion higher than truth.'[120]The British author and poet Rudyard Kipling used the symbol on the cover art of a number of his works, including The Five Nations, 1903, which has it twinned with an elephant.
Denmark[edit]

The Danish brewery company Carlsberg Group used the swastika as a logo[121] from the 19th century until the middle of the 1930s when it was discontinued because of association with the Nazi Party in neighbouring Germany. The swastika carved on elephants at the entrance gates of the company's headquarters in Copenhagen in 1901 can still be seen today.[122]
Iceland[edit]
The Swastika, or the Thors hammer as the logo was called, was used as the logo for H/f. Eimskipafjelag Íslands[123] from founding day in 1914 till the Second world war when it was discontinued and changed to read only the letters Eimskip.
Ireland[edit]
The Swastika Laundry was a laundry founded in 1912, located on Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, a district of Dublin, Ireland. In the fifties Heinrich Böll came across a van belonging to the company while he was staying in Ireland, leading to some awkward moments before he realized the company was older than Nazism and totally unrelated to it. The chimney of the boiler-house of the laundry still stands, but the laundry has been redeveloped.[124][125]
Finland[edit]
In Finland, the swastika (vääräpää meaning 'crooked-head', and later hakaristi, meaning 'hook-cross') was often used in traditional folk-art products, as a decoration or magical symbol on textiles and wood. The swastika was also used by the Finnish Air Force until 1945, and is still used on air force flags.
The tursaansydän, an elaboration on the swastika, is used by scouts in some instances,[126] and by a student organization.[127] The Finnish village of Tursa uses the tursaansydän as a kind of a certificate of authenticity on products made there, and is the origin of this name of the symbol (meaning 'heart of Tursa'),[128] which is also known as the mursunsydän ('walrus-heart'). Traditional textiles are still made in Finland with swastikas as parts of traditional ornaments.
Finnish military[edit]

The Finnish Air Force used the swastika as an emblem, introduced in 1918. The type of swastika adopted by the air-force was the symbol of luck for the Swedish count Eric von Rosen, who donated one of its earliest aircraft; he later became a prominent figure in the Swedish nazi-movement.
The swastika was also used by the women's paramilitary organization Lotta Svärd, which was banned in 1944 in accordance with the Moscow Armistice between Finland and the alliedSoviet Union and Britain.
The President of Finland is the grand master of the Order of the White Rose. According to the protocol, the president shall wear the Grand Cross of the White Rose with collar on formal occasions. The original design of the collar, decorated with 9 swastikas, dates from 1918 and was designed by the artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The Grand Cross with the swastika collar has been awarded 41 times to foreign heads of state. To avoid misunderstandings, the swastika decorations were replaced by fir crosses at the decision of president Urho Kekkonen in 1963 after it became known that the President of FranceCharles De Gaulle was uncomfortable with the swastika collar.
Also a design by Gallen-Kallela from 1918, the Cross of Liberty has a swastika pattern in its arms. The Cross of Liberty is depicted in the upper left corner of the standard of the President of Finland.[129]
In December 2007, a silver replica of the World War II-period Finnish air defence's relief ring decorated with a swastika became available as a part of a charity campaign.[130]
The original war-time idea was that the public swap their precious metal rings for the state air defence's relief ring, made of iron.
Latvia[edit]

The swastika is an ancient Baltic thunder cross symbol (pērkona krusts; also fire cross, ugunskrusts), used to decorate objects, traditional clothing and in archaeological excavations.[131][132][133] Latvia adopted the swastika, for its Air Force in 1918/1919 and continued its use until the Soviet occupation in 1940.[134][135] The cross itself was maroon on a white background, mirroring the colors of the Latvian flag. Earlier versions pointed counter-clockwise, while later versions pointed clock-wise and eliminated the white background.[136][137] Various other Latvian Army units and the Latvian War College[138] (the predecessor of the National Defence Academy) also had adopted the symbol in their battle flags and insignia during the Latvian War of Independence.[139][140] A stylized fire cross is the base of the Order of Lāčplēsis, the highest military decoration of Latvia for participants of the War of Independence.[141] The radical political organization Pērkonkrusts also used the fire cross as one of its symbols.
Lithuania[edit]
As in Latvia, the symbol is a traditional Baltic ornament,[131][142] found on relics dating from at least the 13th century.[143]
Poland[edit]
The traditional symbols of the Podhale Rifles include the edelweiss flower and the Mountain Cross, a swastika symbol popular in folk culture of the Polish mountainous regions. The units of Podhale Rifles, both historical and modern, are notable for their high morale and distinctive uniforms.
Sweden[edit]

The Swedish company ASEA, now a part of ABB, in the late 1800s introduced a company logo featuring a swastika. The logo was replaced in 1933, when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. During the early 1900s, the swastika was used as a symbol of electric power, perhaps because it resembled a waterwheel or turbine. On maps of the period, the sites of hydroelectric power stations were marked with swastikas.
Norway[edit]

The headquarters of the Oslo Municipal Power Station was designed by architects Bjercke and Eliassen in 1928–31. Swastikas adorn its wrought iron gates. The architects knew the swastika as a symbol of electricity and were probably not yet aware that it had been usurped by the German Nazi party and would soon become the foremost symbol of the German Reich. The fact that these gates survived the cleanup after the German occupation of Norway during WW II is a testimony to the innocence and good faith of the power plant and its architects.
North America[edit]
The swastika motif is found in some traditional Native American art and iconography. Historically, the design has been found in excavations of Mississippian-era sites in the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, and on objects associated with the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex (S.E.C.C.). It is also widely used by a number of southwestern tribes, most notably the Navajo, and plains nations such as the Dakota. Among various tribes, the swastika carries different meanings. To the Hopi it represents the wandering Hopi clan; to the Navajo it is one symbol for the whirling log (tsin náálwołí), a sacred image representing a legend that is used in healing rituals.[144] A brightly colored First Nations saddle featuring swastika designs is on display at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada.[145]
The PassamaquoddyNative American tribe, now located in the state of Maine and in Canada, used an elongated swastika on their war canoes in the American colonial period as well as later.[146] A carving of a canoe with a Passamaquody swastika was found in a ruin in the Argonne Forest in France, having been carved there by Moses Neptune, an American soldier of Passamaquody heritage, who was one of the last American soldiers to die in battle in World War I.[147]
Old and new versions of the 45th Infantry Division
Before the 1930s, the symbol for the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army was a red diamond with a yellow swastika, a tribute to the large Native American population in the southwestern United States.
A swastika shape is a symbol in the culture of the Kuna people of Kuna Yala, Panama. In Kuna tradition it symbolizes the octopus that created the world, its tentacles pointing to the four cardinal points.[148]
In February 1925, the Kuna revolted vigorously against Panamanian suppression of their culture, and in 1930 they assumed autonomy. The flag they adopted at that time is based on the swastika shape, and remains the official flag of Kuna Yala. A number of variations on the flag have been used over the years: red top and bottom bands instead of orange were previously used, and in 1942 a ring (representing the traditional Kuna nose-ring) was added to the center of the flag to distance it from the symbol of the Nazi party.[149]
The town of Swastika, Ontario, Canada, is named after the symbol.
From 1909 to 1916, the K-R-I-T automobile, manufactured in Detroit, Michigan, used a right-facing swastika as their trademark.

Nazism[edit]

Use in Nazism[edit]
The swastika was widely used in Europe at the start of the 20th century. It symbolized many things to the Europeans, with the most common symbolism being of good luck and auspiciousness.[5] In the wake of widespread popular usage, in post-World War I Germany, the newly established Nazi Party formally adopted the Hakenkreuz (German: [ˈhaːkn̩kʁɔʏts], meaning 'hooked-cross') in 1920.[150][151] The emblem was a black 'Hooked Cross' (hooks branching clockwise) rotated 45 degrees on a white circle on a red background. This insignia was used on the party's flag, badge, and armband.
In his 1925 work Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler writes that: 'I myself, meanwhile, after innumerable attempts, had laid down a final form; a flag with a red background, a white disk, and a black Hakenkreuz in the middle. After long trials I also found a definite proportion between the size of the flag and the size of the white disk, as well as the shape and thickness of the Hakenkreuz.'
When Hitler created a flag for the Nazi Party, he sought to incorporate both the Hakenkreuz and 'those revered colors expressive of our homage to the glorious past and which once brought so much honor to the German nation'. (Red, white, and black were the colors of the flag of the old German Empire.) He also stated: 'As National Socialists, we see our program in our flag. In red, we see the social idea of the movement; in white, the nationalistic idea; in the Hakenkreuz, the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work.'[152]
The swastika was also understood as 'the symbol of the creating, effecting life' (das Symbol des schaffenden, wirkenden Lebens) and as 'race emblem of Germanism' (Rasseabzeichen des Germanentums).[153]
The concept of racial hygiene was an ideology central to Nazism, though it is scientific racism.[154][155] For Alfred Rosenberg, the Aryans of India were both a model to be imitated and a warning of the dangers of the spiritual and racial 'confusion' that, he believed, arose from the proximity of races. Thus, they saw fit to co-opt the sign as a symbol of the Aryan master race. The use of the swastika as a symbol of the Aryan race dates back to writings of Émile Burnouf. Following many other writers, the German nationalist poet Guido von List believed it was a uniquely Aryan symbol.[citation needed]
Before the Nazis, the swastika was already in use as a symbol of German völkisch nationalist movements (Völkische Bewegung).
José Manuel Erbez says:
The first time the swastika was used with an 'Aryan' meaning was on 25 December 1907, when the self-named Order of the New Templars, a secret society founded by Lanz von Liebenfels, hoisted at Werfenstein Castle [de] (Austria) a yellow flag with a swastika and four fleurs-de-lys.[156]

However, Liebenfels was drawing on an already established use of the symbol.
On 14 March 1933, shortly after Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany, the NSDAP flag was hoisted alongside Germany's national colors. As part of the Nuremberg Laws, the NSDAP flag – with the swastika slightly offset from center – was adopted as the sole national flag of Germany on 15 September 1935.[157]
The swastika was used for badges and flags throughout Nazi Germany, particularly for government and military organizations, but also for 'popular' organizations such as the Reichsbund Deutsche Jägerschaft (German Hunting Society).[158]
While the DAP and the NSDAP had used both right-facing and left-facing swastikas, the right-facing swastika was used consistently from 1920 onwards. Ralf Stelter notes that the swastika flag used on land had a right-facing swastika on both sides, while the ensign (naval flag) had it printed through so that a left-facing swastika would be seen when looking at the ensign with the flagpole to the right.[159] Nazi ensigns had a through and through image, so both versions were present, one on each side, but the Nazi flag on land was right-facing on both sides and at a 45° rotation.[160]
Several variants are found:
- a 45° black swastika on a white disc as in the NSDAP and national flags;
- a 45° black swastika on a white lozenge (Hitler Youth);[161]
- a 45° black swastika with a white outline was painted on the tail of aircraft of the Luftwaffe, and usually using a design based on a 25-small-square subdivided square template (width of 'strokes' in each of its arms, equalling the width of the space between the strokes) – the white border was specified at 1/6 the stroke width of the Hakenkreuz black core figure itself in official publications, and was not included within the '5 x 5' stroke width definition;[162]
- a 45° black swastika outlined by thin white and black lines on a white disc (the German War Ensign);[163]
- an upright black swastika outlined by thin white and black lines on a white disc (Personal standard of Adolf Hitler in which a gold wreath encircles the swastika; the Schutzstaffel; and the Reichsdienstflagge, in which a black circle encircles the swastika);
- small gold, silver, black, or white 45° swastikas, often lying on or being held by an eagle, on many badges and flags.[164]
- a swastika with curved outer arms forming a broken circle, as worn by the Waffen SS 'Wiking' and Nordland Divisions.[165]
Use by anti-Nazis[edit]

During World War II it was common to use small swastikas to mark air-to-air victories on the sides of Allied aircraft, and at least one British fighter pilot inscribed a swastika in his logbook for each German plane he shot down.[166]
Post–World War II stigmatization[edit]
Because of its use by Nazi Germany, the swastika since the 1930s has been largely associated with Nazism. In the aftermath of World War II it has been considered a symbol of hate in the West,[167] or alternatively of white supremacy in many Western countries.[168]
As a result, all of its use, or its use as a Nazi or hate symbol, is prohibited in some countries, including Germany. Because of the stigma attached to the symbol, many buildings that have used the symbol as decoration have had the symbol removed.[citation needed] In some countries, such as the United States' Virginia v. Black 2003 case, the highest courts have ruled that the local governments can prohibit the use of swastika along with other symbols such as cross burning, if the intent of the use is to intimidate others.[6]
Germany[edit]
The German and Austrian postwar criminal code makes the public showing of the Hakenkreuz (the swastika), the sig rune, the Celtic cross (specifically the variations used by white power activists), the wolfsangel, the odal rune and the Totenkopf skull illegal, except for scholarly reasons (and, in the case of the odal rune, as the insignia of the rank of sergeant major, Hauptfeldwebel,[169] in the modern German Bundeswehr). It is also censored from the reprints of 1930s railway timetables published by the Reichsbahn. The eagle remains[where?], but appears to hold a solid black circle between its talons. The swastikas on Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples are exempt, as religious symbols cannot be banned in Germany.
The German fashion company Esprit Holdings was investigated for using traditional British-made folded leather buttons after complaints that they resembled swastikas. In response, Esprit Holdings destroyed two hundred thousand catalogues.[170][171]
A controversy was stirred by the decision of several police departments to begin inquiries against anti-fascists.[172] In late 2005 police raided the offices of the punk rock label and mail order store 'Nix Gut Records' and confiscated merchandise depicting crossed-out swastikas and fists smashing swastikas. In 2006 the Stade police department started an inquiry against anti-fascist youths using a placard depicting a person dumping a swastika into a trashcan. The placard was displayed in opposition to the campaign of right-wing nationalist parties for local elections.[173]
On Friday, 17 March 2006, a member of the Bundestag, Claudia Roth reported herself to the German police for displaying a crossed-out swastika in multiple demonstrations against Neo-Nazis, and subsequently got the Bundestag to suspend her immunity from prosecution. She intended to show the absurdity of charging anti-fascists with using fascist symbols: 'We don't need prosecution of non-violent young people engaging against right-wing extremism.' On 15 March 2007, the Federal Court of Justice of Germany (Bundesgerichtshof) held that the crossed-out symbols were 'clearly directed against a revival of national-socialist endeavors', thereby settling the dispute for the future.[174][175][176]
On August 9, 2018, Germany lifted the ban on the usage of swastikas and other Nazi symbols in video games. 'Through the change in the interpretation of the law, games that critically look at current affairs can for the first time be given a USK age rating,' USK managing director Elisabeth Secker told CTV. 'This has long been the case for films and with regards to the freedom of the arts, this is now rightly also the case with computer and videogames.' [177][178]
Legislation in other European countries[edit]
- Until 2013 in Hungary, it was a criminal misdemeanour to publicly display 'totalitarian symbols', including the swastika, the SS insignia, and the Arrow Cross, punishable by custodial arrest.[179][180] Display for academic, educational, artistic or journalistic reasons was allowed at the time. The communist symbols of hammer and sickle and the red star were also regarded as totalitarian symbols and had the same restriction by Hungarian criminal law until 2013.[179]
- In Latvia, public display of Nazi and Soviet symbols, including the Nazi swastika, is prohibited in public events since 2013.[181][182] However, in a court case from 2007 a regional court in Riga held that the swastika can be used as a ethnographic symbol, in which case the ban does not apply.[183]
- In Lithuania, public display of Nazi and Soviet symbols, including the Nazi swastika, is an administrative offence, punishable by a fine from 150 to 300 euros. According to judicial practice, display of a non-Nazi swastika is legal.[184]
- In Poland, public display of Nazi symbols, including the Nazi swastika, is a criminal offence punishable by up to eight years of imprisonment. The use of the swastika as a religious symbol is legal.[185]
Attempted ban in the European Union[edit]
The European Union's Executive Commission proposed a European Union-wide anti-racism law in 2001, but European Union states failed to agree on the balance between prohibiting racism and freedom of expression.[186] An attempt to ban the swastika across the EU in early 2005 failed after objections from the British Government and others. In early 2007, while Germany held the European Union presidency, Berlin proposed that the European Union should follow German Criminal Law and criminalize the denial of the Holocaust and the display of Nazi symbols including the swastika, which is based on the Ban on the Symbols of Unconstitutional Organizations Act. This led to an opposition campaign by Hindu groups across Europe against a ban on the swastika. They pointed out that the swastika has been around for 5,000 years as a symbol of peace.[187][188] The proposal to ban the swastika was dropped by Berlin from the proposed European Union wide anti-racism laws on 29 January 2007.[186]
Latin America[edit]
- The manufacture, distribution or broadcasting of the swastika, with the intent to propagate Nazism, is a crime in Brazil as dictated by article 20, paragraph 1, of federal statute 7.716, passed in 1989. The penalty is a two to five years prison term and a fine.[189]
- The former flag of the Guna Yala autonomous territory of Panama was based on a swastika design. In 1942 a ring was added to the centre of the flag to differentiate it from the symbol of the Nazi Party (this version subsequently fell into disuse).[149]
United States[edit]
The public display of Nazi-era German flags (or any other flags) is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of speech.[190] The Nazi Reichskriegsflagge has also been seen on display at white supremacist events within United States borders.[191]
As with many neo-Nazi groups across the world, the swastika was also a part of the American Nazi Party's flag before its first dissolution in 1967. The symbol was originally chosen by the initial organization's founder, George L. Rockwell.[192] Its 're-use' was initiated by successor organizations in 1983, without the publicity Rockwell's original organization possessed.
The swastika, in various iconographic forms, is one of the hate symbols identified in use as graffiti in US schools, and is a part of the 1999 US Department of Education's emergency school-wide response trigger.[clarification needed][193]
Media[edit]
In 2010, Microsoft officially spoke out against use of the swastika by players of the first-person shooterCall of Duty: Black Ops. In Black Ops, players are allowed to customize their name tags to represent, essentially, whatever they want. The swastika can be created and used, but Stephen Toulouse, director of Xbox Live policy and enforcement, stated that players with the symbol on their name tag will be banned (if someone reports as inappropriate) from Xbox Live.[194]
In the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular in Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, the swastikas on German trucks, aircraft and actor uniforms in the reenactment of a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark were removed in 2004. The swastika has been replaced by a stylized Greek cross.[195]
Nazi imagery was adapted and incorporated into the 2016 sci-fi movie 2BR02B: To Be or Naught to Be. Its inclusion was to subliminally draw parallels between the movie's Federal Bureau of Termination and Nazi Germany, and also refer to Kurt Vonnegut's experiences as a POW and the influence World War II played in his imagining of a population-controlled future where authorities use gas chambers to terminate people. The Federal Bureau of Termination logo appears as a white geometric design with a black outline, centered on vertical banners, in reference to the Third Reich banners. These banners were initially red, until the crew felt the allusion was too strong. The movie's hospital was envisaged as the Bureau's branch that controlled birth, and their red cross was given 'wings' to transform it into a swastika, and link it to the Bureau's logo.[196]

In 2005, authorities in Tajikistan called for the widespread adoption of the swastika as a national symbol. President Emomali Rahmonov declared the swastika an Aryan symbol, and 2006 'the year of Aryan culture', which would be a time to 'study and popularize Aryan contributions to the history of the world civilization, raise a new generation (of Tajiks) with the spirit of national self-determination, and develop deeper ties with other ethnicities and cultures'.[197]
East and Southeast Asia[edit]

In East Asia, the swastika is prevalent in Buddhist monasteries and communities. It is commonly found in Buddhist temples, religious artefacts, texts related to Buddhism and schools founded by Buddhist religious groups. It also appears as a design or motif (singularly or woven into a pattern) on textiles, architecture and various decorative objects as a symbol of luck and good fortune. The icon is also found as a sacred symbol in the Bon tradition, but in the left facing mode.[198][199]
Many Chinese religions make use of the swastika symbol, including Guiyidao and Shanrendao. The Red Swastika Society, which is the philanthropic branch of Guiyidao, runs two schools in Hong Kong (the Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School[200] and the Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tuen Mun Primary School[201]) and one in Singapore (Red Swastika School). All of them show the swastika in their logos.
Among the predominantly Hindu population of Bali, in Indonesia, the swastika is common in temples, homes and public spaces. Similarly, the swastika is a common icon associated with Buddha's footprints in Theravada Buddhist communities of Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia.[199]
In Japan, the swastika is also used as a map symbol and is designated by the Survey Act and related Japanese governmental rules to denote a Buddhist temple.[202]
The city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture designates this symbol as its official flag, which stemmed from its use in the emblem of the Tsugaru clan, the lords of Hirosaki Domain during the Edo period.
Indian subcontinent[edit]

In India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, the swastika is common. Temples, businesses and other organisations, such as the Buddhist libraries, Ahmedabad Stock Exchange and the Nepal Chamber of Commerce,[203] use the swastika in reliefs or logos.[199] Swastikas are ubiquitous in Indian and Nepalese communities, located on shops, buildings, transport vehicles, and clothing. The swastika remains prominent in Hindu ceremonies such as weddings. The left facing sauwastika symbol is found in tantric rituals.[8]
Musaeus College in Colombo, Sri Lanka, a Buddhist girls' school, has a left facing swastika in their school logo.
In India, swastik and swastika, with their spelling variants, are first names for males and females respectively, for instance with Swastika Mukherjee. The Seal of Bihar contains two swastikas.
Western misinterpretation of Asian use[edit]
Since the end of the 20th century, and through the early 21st century, confusion and controversy has occurred when consumer goods bearing the traditional Jain, Buddhist, or Hindu symbols have been exported to the West, notably to North America and Europe, and have been interpreted by consumers as bearing a Nazi symbol. This has resulted in several such products having been boycotted or pulled from shelves.
When a ten-year-old boy in Lynbrook, New York, bought a set of Pokémon cards imported from Japan in 1999, two of the cards contained the left-facing Buddhist swastika. The boy's parents misinterpreted the symbol as the right-facing Nazi swastika and filed a complaint to the manufacturer. Nintendo of America announced that the cards would be discontinued, explaining that what was acceptable in one culture was not necessarily so in another; their action was welcomed by the Anti-Defamation League who recognised that there was no intention to offend, but said that international commerce meant that, 'Isolating [the Swastika] in Asia would just create more problems.'[16]
In 2002, Christmas crackers containing plastic toy red pandas sporting swastikas were pulled from shelves after complaints from consumers in Canada. The manufacturer, based in China, said the symbol was presented in a traditional sense and not as a reference to the Nazis, and apologized to the customers for the cross-cultural mixup.[204]
New religious movements[edit]
Besides the use as a religious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, which can be traced to pre-modern traditions, the swastika is also used by a number of new religious movements established in the modern period.

- The Raëlian Movement, who believe that extraterrestrials originally created all life on earth, use a symbol that is often the source of considerable controversy: an interlaced star of David and a swastika. The Raelians state that the Star of David represents infinity in space whereas the swastika represents infinity in time – no beginning and no end in time, and everything being cyclic.[205] In 1991, the symbol was changed to remove the swastika, out of respect to the victims of the Holocaust, but as of 2007 has been restored to its original form.[206]
- The Tantra-based movement Ananda Marga (Devanagari: आनन्द मार्ग, meaning Path of Bliss) uses a motif similar to the Raëlians, but in their case the apparent star of David is defined as intersecting triangles with no specific reference to Jewish culture.[citation needed]
- The Falun Gongqigong movement uses a symbol that features a large swastika surrounded by four smaller (and rounded) ones, interspersed with yin-and-yang symbols. The usage is taken from traditional Chinese symbolism, and alludes to Dan Tian, a chakra-like portion of the esoteric human anatomy, located in the stomach.
- The swastika is a holy symbol of Germanic Heathenry, along with hammer of Thor and runes. This tradition – found in Scandinavia, Germany, and elsewhere – considers the swastika derived from a Norse symbol for the sun. Their use of the symbol has led people to accuse them of being a neo-Nazi group.[207][208][209]
- A 'fire cross' is used by the Baltic neo-pagan movements Dievturība in Latvia and Romuva in Lithuania.[210]

The swastika is an ancient sun symbol, originating in Sanskrit, a writing system in use during The Buddha's lifetime, and used in many cultures throughout history.
If you see it in either an Asian-themed work, or one from the 1920s or earlier, the symbol has nothing to do with Nazi Germany.
The original swastika stands at a 90-degree angle instead of a 45-degree one, and its arms may point in either direction, whereas the Nazi swastika's arms always point clockwise. Usually, but far from always, there are lots of variants. See the Real Life examples below for more details.
Note on terminology:
- Swastika is the modern English word for the symbol facing either direction (卍 or 卐), a loanword based on the Sanskrit word for the 卐 symbol, 'svastika' (which also has some other meanings). For reference, the Sanskrit for 卍 is 'sauvastika'.
- Manji is the Japanese word for the counterclockwise version of the symbol (卍). The Japanese language also has a few different words for the clockwise version (卐), most of which translate along the lines of 'reverse manji'. It comes from the Chinese character for either symbol, man (卍 or 卐)—'manji' means 'man symbol/letter/character'. In Japanese, it is really only in use in Buddhist texts and the like, hence its meaning as a part of a word can often be unclear even to native Japanese speakers/within the Japanese language itself, therefore the self-referential name.

- YuYu Hakusho has a minor villain with a manji tattooed on his forehead. This was removed in the edited English dub, but kept in the English manga localization with an editorial note for explanation. This is lampshaded in Lanipator'sAbridged Series. Yusuke calls the villain a skinhead, and when the villain reacts with wonderment, Yusuke asks him how he couldn't see that one coming, pointing that he is both bald and has a swastika on his forehead. It then gets a further twist, as the villain starts explaining at length how his swastika is not German but Buddhist, and Yusuke attacks him while he monologues, telling him afterwards that he was perfectly aware of the difference but needed a distraction.
- Manji of Blade of the Immortal has the swastika on the back of his clothes as a reference to immortality. In the original version, it's drawn in the 'Nazi direction', but in the English translation it was flipped to the 'Buddhist direction'.
- In Bleach, Ichigo's bankai incorporates a swastika into the sword's guard. The swastika itself is used in writing the word 'bankai'—卍解—making Zangetsu's release a kind of visual pun.
- In One Piece, a swastika was incorporated in the crest of the Whitebeard pirates. This was changed in the anime to crossbones in a + shape. The manga later Retconned the symbol to match. Viz Media left the early logo unaltered in their English translation, but added an editors note explaining that it's 'an ancient Buddhist symbol, not a swastika'.
- In Naruto, the Caged Bird seal is a manji symbol in the manga, but the anime changed it to an 'X'.
- Early in Rurouni Kenshin, there's a Yakuza-like faction called the 'Hishimanji'. They wear armbands with the manji turned on one of its corners (yes, just like the Nazis), as well as having them printed in a few spots of their robes.
- There is a BL manga set in the Edo period called 'Hyaku to Manji' ('100 and 卍 ', with the manji in the title). It has become well-known for its historically-influenced art style, but Western fans often get too freaked out by the title to give it a try.
- There was a Swastika Laundry in Dublin who even painted it in black on a white roundel on their red trucks, adding 'Since 1912' in 1940. They stayed in business until the '70s.
- The Coca-Cola company produced swastika watch fobs in the 1920's. They're somewhat rare and obscure collector's items today.
- Carlsberg beer formerly had a swastika emblem. At the brewery in Denmark, there is (or was in 1975) a life-size stone elephant resting one foot on a sphere adorned with a swastika.
- In Sin City, the assassin Miho throws a large shuriken in the shape of a swastika.
- A non-Nazi swastika was used as a weapon against Nazis in an issue of Grant Morrison's run on JLA. In an alternate reality, a non-powered Wonder Woman fights Nazi zombies, who are repelled by a Buddhist swastika.
- One Batman story sees an elderly Jewish man forced to draw swastikas on his friends' graves by a gang of neo-Nazis. Unable to bring himself to obey but too frightened to refuse, he draws counter-clockwise, Hindu-style swastikas instead of Nazi ones, knowing that the gang members are too ignorant to tell the difference.
- In The Da Vinci Code, Robert Langdon is giving a speech at a conference. He shows part of an image of a swastika, everyone thinks about Nazis, then Langdon shows the complete image, with a clearly Buddhist context.
- In Kal Ho Naa Ho, Naina and Jennifer paint a swastika in the window of their restaurant – in New York – as part of its revamping. No one comments on this, and the new concept is a huge success.
- Subverted in One Night with the King, an adaptation of the Book of Esther. The villain Haman wears the good luck swastika millennia before the Nazis, yet also happens to be planning to exterminate the Jews.
- In Iron Sky, when the Moon Nazis attack, everyone thinks India is in league with them because the Indian ambassador to the UN happened to be wearing a ring with a swastika on it.
- In Dasepo Sonyo, a swastika can be seen in the background of a Buddhist class.
- Tsogt Taij: Played with. It is a non-Nazi swastika, being a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism...but this film was made in Mongolia, a Soviet client state, in 1945. The Tibetan Buddhists are the bad guys, seeking to enslave and oppress the Mongolians. It's really an example of both this trope andA Nazi by Any Other Name.
- Master of the Flying Guillotine: Flying Guillotine masquerades as a Buddhist monk while wearing robes emblazoned with a giant swastika.
- One autobiography of the last emperor of Russia mentions the empress being very fond of the Swastika.
- In The Great Gatsby, the Jewish gangster Meyer Wolfsheim operates out of the 'Swastika Club' (presumably, like many older buildings, it has that design on it). There is some argument though that this wasn't an innocent usage, as Wolfsheim is something of an anti-Semitic caricature, the Nazi movement had already adopted it as their symbol by the time the novel was written, and Fitzgerald was fairly knowledgeable of white supremacist movements.
- UK editions of Rudyard Kipling's books published before the 1930s often have left-hand swastikas on the title pages.
- 'Origin Story', by Dwight R. Decker, uses this trope; a magical being who's been away for the past century gets turned down when he tries to give a man the superpowers and identity of Captain Swastika (with big swastikas on his costume).
- Invoked in Poul Anderson's Operation Chaos, where the hero, from a universe where World War II was fought entirely differently, knows no other form and can not understand why a demon in hell is wearing the ancient and honorable symbol of the fylfot. The reader, of course, gets enough clues to recognize a Ghostapo Hitler.
- Carl Sagan's book Comet recounts an instance during the filming of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage where the film crew were greeted with paper swastikas while filming in India during a festival. Several of the crew, including Sagan himself (who was Jewish), were briefly alarmed until they realized it was an example of this trope.
- Sagan also theorized the existence of swastika-shaped comets as a possible origin of the symbol.
- One Nation Under Jupiter: Gottlieb gives a swastika necklace to Diagoras, calling it a symbol of Thor. Justified as the Nazis never existed in this timeline.
- One of the needle monster species in Eden Green looks like an 'X' when standing still; when rolling toward prey, its legs hinge, taking on the appearance of a dizzying swastika.
- Kolchak: The Night Stalker: in the 'Rakshasa' episode, Kolchak sought wisdom from an emigrant from India, who had swastikas. The man explained that in his culture they were holy symbols.
- The X-Files : The 'Calusari' episode features a swastika as a Romanian symbol of protection.
- In a Milt Gross Count Screwloose comic done on November 2, 1930, a canoe with a thick-lined, red swastika is pictured in one of the panels.
- Michinoku Pro Wrestling wrestler Manjimaru used to wear pants emblazoned with the svastika because his name contains the 卍 character. His former partners The Brahman Brothers, however, wore svastikas only For the Evulz.
- Marvelous faction Mabutachi 2 Manjimanji are known for a pose where they make manjis with their limbs, or fingers◊ in the case of Rosa Negra, who initially didn't know what the kids were doing.
- One of the Pokémon trading card game cards, the Koga's Ninja Trick card, originally had the symbol on it in mirror image until people complained and it was altered for the international release.
- Duel Masters: As Manji became more common in Japanese slang, they have been showing up on some cards in 2018, and it's even on the name of one card set.

- Both Ran and Yukari Yakumo from Perfect Cherry Blossom use a swastika-themed spellcard in their battles with you. Ran's version is Shikigami's Shot 'Ultimate Buddhist' and Yukari's is Evil Spirits 'Butterfly in the Zen Temple.'
- Imperishable Night has Fujiwara no Mokou's Deathless 'Xu Fu's Dimension' spellcard.
- This is set up purposefully in Epic Battle Fantasy 2. The Big Bad Lance is portrayed as a neo-Nazi intent on destroying the world to rebuild it. However, if one looks carefully at his uniform, his swastika is facing the other direction from the Nazi swastika to form the Buddhist symbol for peace, an appropriate reflection of his ultimate motives.
- The original The Legend Of Zelda has a dungeon shaped like a swastika, described as 'manji' in the manual.
- Appears in the seventh world of Namco's arcade game Phozon. A clockwise swastika appears in the world's second stage and a counter-clockwise swastika appears in the world's third stage.
- In Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru, the title character's name is written with one.
- There is a video game called Icchi Banketsu where the 'ban' part of the title is written as a manji. Despite having lots of gorgeous Bishoujo and Bishounen character designs (and together, for once!), it will likely never become well-known outside of Japan for this reason. The concept is basically to collect pretty anime versions of historical and legendary figures, sort of like the Fate Series, but with more of a focus on Japan.
- Appears as the crest of many Indian regions in Crusader Kings 2: Rajahs of India.
- One of the weapons in La-Mulana is the Keyblade (no relation to another video game series featuring keyblades), a mystically-attuned sword with a swastika inserted in the blade. In the remake, however, the design was changed to a more ambiguously square shape.
- City of Reality: Todo has a shirt with one on the front, off-center. It is never shown in its entirety.
- Subnormality: At one point, the time-traveling Nazis claim to be doing this.
- Used for Deliberate Values Dissonance in the Alternate History timeline 'Monarchy World' by Tony Jones, in which a swastika is used as the emblem of the United Nations-equivalent precisely because it is such a universally used symbol in many cultures and religions (see below).
- In Look to the West the swastika becomes thought of as an Etruscan symbol because it was found on an Etruscan artefact and then used as the symbol of a Tuscan-based radical movement inspired by the Etruscan civilisation as a result. In reality of course the Etruscans were just one of many cultures to use the symbol, but it's the one that got all the publicity.
- An Internet meme popularized by YTMND makes fun of the general public's ignorance of non-Nazi swastikas and will usually display either an unintentionally swastika-shaped design or a historic/non-Nazi example with the caption 'OMG Secret Nazi _____!', often accompanied with a superimposed image of Hitler and German dance-pop music, i.e. the song 'Heut ist mein tag' by Blumchen.
- Commented on in a meme that shows a gigantic elephant representing the Hindu god Ganesh attacking a Nazi army with the caption 'The Nazis stole the Swastika; Ganesh wants it back.'
- In SCP Foundation, [[SCP-914]] transform objects into other related objects of different quality depending on the setting. When tested with 4 printed swastikas, two turned into Nazi themed objects, and two into Hinduism themed ones.
- Gem fusion designs from Steven Universe are heavily inspired by Hinduism, and take other thematic elements from the religion. This is why the original animatic for the episode which introduced fusion, 'Giant Woman', shows Opal arranging her four arms into the shape of a traditional Hindu swastika when summoning her weapon. The swastika, however, was not used in the final version, for obvious reasons.

- Hinduism: A representation of the god Ganesh, as an emblem of good fortune, to evoke 'Shakti'.
- Buddhism: As a representation of eternity.
- China and Japan: Eternity. Also used in Japan (as well as in Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) to mark the locations of Buddhist temples on maps. Present in words of chants that are in Old Japanese, and ones that are actually in a old Chinese language/dialect and just read with the Japanese pronunciation of the kanji. The ones in a Chinese language may additionally be the result of Chinese monks phonetically rendering the original Sanskrit into a Chinese language without, in fact, translating it. It does make a case for the manji becoming a kanji in the first place, though. It's often claimed it also mean 10,000. This is false. 10,000 is 'mahn' written 万.
- Jainism: Even more prominent than in Buddhism or Hinduism; all holy books and temples must bear the swastika.
- Iran: A golden necklace of three swastikas at least three thousand years old was found.
- Ural Mountains: The Bashkir people feature the swastika prominently in their ancient iconography.
- Armenia: The swastika was prominent in medieval architecture, such as churches and fortresses, and also found in pre-Christian carvings. It was called an arevkhatch (sun cross).
- Ethiopia: The rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, an ancient town in northern Ethiopia, have swastika-shaped windows.
- Pre-Columbian America: The swastika has been found associated with cultures throughout North and South America, including the First Nations of Canada, the Navajo and Hopi of the southwestern United States, the Mississippian culture of the east and southeast US, and the Kuna people of Panama. Some of these are still in use today, though efforts are made to distance them from the Nazis.
- Ancient Grome: A symbol of eternal motion, representing a windmill or watermill. Typically not found alone, but rather as part of a repeating design.
- Celtic: Pre-Christian Celts used swastikas on their metalwork and stonework. They also occur as an incidental pattern within Knotwork, especially the four-cord style.
- Germans: Bore special importance in funerary symbols, possibly as an emblem of Thor.
- Illyria (South-eastern Europe): Represented the sun.
- Baltics: Pre-Christian. The two versions were called the fire cross and the thunder cross, and represented the thunder god Perkons and the sun.
- The Basques: Their main symbol is a decidedly curvy variation resembling four commas. It is still commonly seen throughout Basque communities.
- Slavic: Pre-Christian. Found in ornamentation, usually as a solar symbol.
- Sami (Arctic Europeans): A double cross or double axe is found on their drums, thought to represent the thunder god, a derivation of Thor.
- Numerous Cultures: As noted earlier with Celtic Knotwork, variants of the swastika pattern are easily generated within repeating patterns of lines and shapes. Associations both positive and negative aside, four pointed spirals make for eye-catching design elements, and so they can be discovered in tiled-pattern-based art forms ranging from Islamic geometric art to quilting. In addition to making for the occasional awkward antique wallpaper or tile floor, it is also the source of some occasional Everyone Is Satan in Hell drama when a modern designer fails to notice, say, something unusual about the pattern on that Hanukkah giftwrap they're making.
- The Raelians hold an annual 'take back the swastika' day to try to rehabilitate the public's perception of the swastika. Given that they're a UFO cult, not many notice and even fewer care. They did however manage to generate quite a bit of controversy in Israel with their symbol, a Star of David combined with a Swastika.

- Which is one of many such movements. Some just want an old symbol not to be judged based on a relatively modern and brief movement. Some do it for their own religious reasons. And others think taking away the symbol of Nazism would be a great blow to neo-nazi movements.
- The Finnish Air Force used to use a swastika because that was the personal lucky emblem of Count Eric von Rosen, the man who donated their first plane. Confusing when Finland was in an Enemy Mine-style alliance with Nazi Germany during World War II (and operated American and Dutch planes).
- The swastika is square and blue, making it easily distinguishable from the Nazi one. A variant with long central arms was used by the army. While the air force now uses a roundel, both types of swastikas are still quietly found on flags, medals, and war memorials.
- The official Finnish order Order of the White Rose of Finland had swastikas as part of its collar until 1963, where they were replaced with fir crosses.
- There is an indirect connection between the Finnish swastika and the Nazis. The benefactor of the Finnish air force, the Swedish Count von Rosen, was a good friend of Hermann Goering when the latter was in exile in Sweden in 1920's. Indeed, Goering would go on to marry the count's niece. It is possible that the Nazi use of swastika drew some inspiration from this relationship.
- The Isle of Man (in the British Isles) has a time-honoured triskelion – three human legs in armor, conjoined in a swastika-like arrangement – as its national emblem◊.
- The US 45th division (formed from Arizona National Guard) had a yellow swastika on red as its patch until 1939. This was replaced by a gold Thunderbird. Interestingly, Bill Mauldin (who was in the division, from when it was still National Guard) didn't make a cartoon about it.
- A wartime division raised in the south-west also wore the Native American swastika prominently on both arms. In early 1942 they were on the point of boarding ship on the East Coast to arrive in Great Britain as one of the first large American contingents. At the last minute it was suggested that eighteen thousand Americans arriving in Britain wearing swastika arm patches was not likely to win hearts and minds. The Thunderbird patches were provided as a tactful alternative.
- The original highway signs for Arizona had swastikas in an arrowhead at the bottom◊ up until 1942, when it was changed for obvious reasons.
- Red October era Russia: the swastika was used as a symbol on the Provisional Government money (kerenki). The Bolsheviks also considered adopting it but ultimately rejected it in favor of the famous red star. Ironically, the Nazi party chose it to have a strong, identifiable symbol which would counter the Communists'.
- Occult: The 'Sign of the Mourning of Isis' in some Golden Dawn derived groups involves taking up a swastika posture.
- The CU(Credit Union) Service Center has a swastika that is tilted at a 45 degree angle (like the Nazi swastika), but has curved spokes that come to a point (unlike the Nazi swastika)◊ as its symbol.
- The Coronado Naval Amphibious Base in San Diego Bay features a swastika-shaped building... and, just across the street to the southwest, two bomber-shaped buildings 'flying' towards it. (This one was built in WWII.) This caused a controversy in 2007, when someone spotted the swastika with Google Earth but missed the bombers.
- Carlsberg Beer originally had a swastika as part of their trademark. Its use was gradually phased out during the thirties and the swastika finally disappeared completely in 1945, however it can still be seen on the old brewery buildings as well as on some of the museums and churches in Copenhagen that the brewery's philanthropic owner Carl Jacobsen paid for.
- The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado (famous as the inspiration for the Overlook in The Shining), built in 1907, featured ornamental swastikas in the woodwork. These have since been covered up with wooden plaques, but it's not too hard to point them out.
- The Japanese martial art of Shorinji Kempo, originally used the Buddhist swastika as its emblem. It's now been replaced by a pair of intertwining circles, which are interpreted as spinning swastikas. The Buddhist swastika, however, is still retained in the Shorinji Kempo headquarters in Shikoku island, Japan.
- Dutch martial artist Gerard Gordeau has a swastika tattooed on his torso, which along his bald head and his status as one of the most infamous dirty fighters in the world has gained him some serious heat among Mixed Martial Arts fans. However, the swastika itself is actually part of a bigger tattoo which contains Buddhist art, and Gordeau himself is rumored to have Jewish ancestry, so he is far from being a Nazi skinhead.
- The workers who built The Spirit of St. Louis painted a swastika inside of the propeller's nose for luck along with their signatures. The sign next to the nose cone in its display at the Smithsonian explains that this use of the symbol was Native-American-influenced, but given Charles Lindbergh's later historynote , it can be seen as Harsher in Hindsight.
- Corsair LED PC case fans, due to placement of 4 LED strips across the curved fan arms, end up creating a very Swastika-like pattern◊ on the front of your computer when running, complete with the enclosing circle. 'PC Masterrace' jokes aside, it's probably unintentional on Corsair's part.
- The entrance hall of the Botanic Faculty of the University of Munich features a rather prominent swastika mosaic on its marble floor. Even though the design, representing flora and fertility, dates back all the way to 1910, it still tends to turn a lot of heads due to the fact that it's in Munich, of all places. The university even considered putting up an explanatory sign next to it.
- Until 1983, the yearbook at New Mexico State University was called Swastika. It was changed in spite of a poll in which students voted overwhelmingly to keep it.
- Swastika is a small mining town in Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1908 and named after the original good luck symbol, the community refused on multiple occasions to change the town's name despite being Overshadowed by Controversy since World War II.
- Similarly, 'Swastika Trail' in the small Ontario community of Puslinch came under some fire from B'nai Brith Canada who started an online movement to change the street's name, but were outvoted 4-1 and the name was retained. Like Swastika, Ontario, the name was adopted in the 1920's and has nothing to do with Nazism, but this doesn't stop the street name from generating controversy.
- Soldiers of the Marinebrigade Ehrhardt◊, a Free Corps led by Hermann Ehrhardt that operated at the start of the Weimar Republic. It had no ties to the nascent Nazi party initially, although it had similar ultra-nationalist and anticommunist prospects. It took part in the fightings for the cities of central Germany and the northwestern ports during the late 1918/early 1919 communist revolution attempts and the Silesian uprisings against Polish insurgents, participated in the Kapp Putsch in 1920, disbanded that year and eventually formed a secret society, the Organisation Consul, which assassinated Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau in 1922. During Adolf Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, Ehrhardt refused to help the nazi party but most of his men eventually joined it, and he ended up one of those listed to be killed during the Night of the Long Knives, but managed to escape to Austria.
